Grid Style Wood Registers for Returns and Airflow

Eggcrate Style Wood Vents

Eggcrate or Grid Style Vents

Eggcrate style wood vents provide clean lines and sufficient air flow to work as an air return register or as a supply vent when there is no need for directional air flow.
Our customers have installed eggcrate wood cents into ceilings, walls, floors, toe kicks, and cabinets.  Cabinet makers have used them in kitchens as a design element, and AV contractors have used our eggcrate vents in media cabinets to provide cooling air for equipment.
Our eggcrate wood vents are built to last.  With 3/8″ wide webbing and doweled construction you can rest assured these wood vents can take foot traffic and will be worry free for years to come.
All eggcrate vents are custom made for each customer’s job.  This ensures fit will be perfect, down to the sixteenth of an inch.

Mounting Methods for Eggcrate Vents

For applications in floors of any thickness, walls or ceilings, when maximum air flow is desired. The Insert Model has a self-rimming, eased lip 1/4″ thick and 3/4″ wide. Fluted dowels secure each web to the 1-1/4″ wide side rails and end pieces. Specify the exact opening size when ordering.

Flush No Frame

The Flush NO Frame Model has a 1″ wide rail. Fluted dowels secure each web to the side rails and end pieces.

Flush With Frame

Frames are cut from 1-3/16″ rabbeted stock. The frame is glued and blind-nailed to the subfloor and the flooring fitted to it.

What style of vent works best for your application?

Floor Application

Insert Style: Easiest to install.  The flange provides cover for any rough cut openings

Flush No Frame: Very clean, modern look.  Will need clean cuts to install.  Not always recommended for floor as expansion and contraction may make removal for cleaning difficult.

Flush With Frame: Great for floor application.  We recommend having grills onsite prior to floor install so everything can be snugged up nicely.  Frame will take the expansion and contraction of the floors, making the gut section easier to remove for duct cleaning in the future.

Wall Application

Insert Style: Easiest to install.  The flange provides cover for any rough cut openings as well as a place to mount screws.

Flush No Frame: Very clean, modern look.  Install requires a bit more skill.  Will either need to “frame out” opening from inside to provide nailing surface, secure J-Bead to vent for drywall installation, or hold in place with molding.  Magnets are another option.

Flush With Frame: Not recommended for wall application, though we can make a “gut only” to custom fit any rabbet cuts you may have made.

Ceiling Application

Insert Style: Easiest to install.  The flange provides cover for any rough cut openings as well as a place to mount screws.

Flush No Frame: Very clean, modern look.  Install requires a bit more skill.  Will either need to “frame out” opening from inside to provide nailing surface, secure J-Bead to vent for drywall installation, or hold in place with molding.  Magnets are another option.

Flush With Frame: Not recommended for ceiling application, though we can make a “gut only” to custom fit any rabbet cuts you may have made.

When we manufacture the eggrate style wood vents the inner field of openings will be made to 7/8″openings.  Depending on your duct size, the outer perimeter will have the opening size adjusted to fit the opening.

Custom Options for Eggcrate Wood Vents

Options for all Eggcrate Vents Regardless of Style

Duct Opening:  This is the most common part of the wood vent that we make changes to. The smallest duct opening we can do is 2″, and the largest for one vent we can do is 48″.  Need bigger?  We can make the vent in multiple pieces.  We can handle measurements down to 1/16 of an inch.

Grid Opening: Our standard grid opening is 7/8″ square.  We regularly do 1/2″ square, and can do other measurements as well.

Webbing Thickness: Our standard webbing width is 3/8″.  We can adjust this to be more narrow depending on the application.

Insert/Self Rimming

Flange Size:  Our standard size flange is 3/4″.  Sometimes you need a larger flange to make installation easier.  Sometimes you need a smaller flange to fit a tight space.  We do this all the time!

Flange Removal: We can also cut a flange or two off in order to fit into tighter spaces.

Neck Removal: Sometimes the “neck” on the vent can impede installation.  We can sand that off no problem.

Squared Off Shoulder: Our standard vents are rounded over, but we can make them with a “square shoulder” no problem.

Metal Reinforcements: We now offer metal reinforcement frames for large floor application vents.  See our Blog Post Here

Flush No Frame

Vent Thickness:  Our standard thickness for flush mount wood vents is 3/4″.  We can go thicker or thinner depending on your needs.  This is most commonly done for engineered floors, or floors that have been sanded in the past.  3/8″ thick is the thinnest we can go.

Rail Width:  We can increase or decrease the width of the “rail” (border) in order to fit your opening needs.
